- First Mile 指的是局端到機房端
「First Mile」定義為由企業或住家用戶連接到電信業者局端設備這一段網路，而這局端設備通常是連接到都會網路的交換機或路由器。如果將處理「first mile」網路設備放在住家大樓底下，就是所謂的 MDU (Multi Dwelling Units)。乙太網路在設備及維運網管上的成本非常便宜，在 2000 年 11 月IEEE 802.3 工作小組成立了 EFM (Ethernet in the First Mile)研究小組，並於 2001 年 7 月開始制定 IEEE 802.3ah EFM 標準。IEEE 802.3ah 以下列三種 topology 為基礎，點對多點光纖(Point to multipoint on optical fiber)，點對點光纖(Point to point on optical fiber)，點對點銅線(Point to point on copper)。此外，OAM (Operations、Administration and Maintenance) 也是標準制定的一個重點。
